Top Five Kayaking Destinations in Minnesota

Boundary Waters, Duluth, MN 

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a stunning and vast million-acre nature preserve located at the top of Minnesota and touches Canada. This wilderness includes glacial lakes, streams, and peaceful scenery that’s a dream to kayak through. There are water trails and areas for all kayak skill levels.  

Rum River State Water Trail, St. Francis, MN 

Formed by a glacier, this water trail starts at Lake Mille Lacs and flows across Minnesota into the Mississippi River. The Rum River is designated as a scenic river with stunning views of trees, rock formations, marshes, and wildlife. This water trail is perfect for beginners to explore river kayaking. 

Bde Maka Ska (Lake Calhoun), Minneapolis, MN 

This is the largest lake in the Twin Cities Metro and offers ample kayak rentals and kayak launch spots. This kayak destination is perfect for exploring an urban setting as you float along with your kayak. This lake is the start of the connected Minneapolis Chain of Lakes for more exploration opportunities. 

 

St. Croix River State Water Trail, Taylor Falls, MN 

This water trail is a national wild and scenic river with the ability to paddle through peaceful nature scenes including limestone bluffs of enjoying fishing for smallmouth bass and sunfish. If you’re up for an overnight trip, there are camping spots along the river.  

 

Zumbro River State Trail, Zumbro Falls, MN 

This river winds its way through southeast Minnesota into the Mississippi River with excellent launch spots near Zumbro Falls, MN. This river does have beautiful nature scenes, but some places have increases rapids. Paddlers tend to see abundant wildlife as they float down this river and notice the wooded areas as well as rock formations.
