Sparta, New Jersey lies on what is considered one of the finest lake communities in the Northeast, Lake Mohawk. The pristine 3-mile-long lake is exceptionally clean and beautiful. A haven for kayakers and canoers. But unless you happen to own property on the lake, it’s entirely off limits. Luckily, it’s not the only place to go kayaking near Sparta. Here’s a list of some other kayaking destinations near Sparta, NJ that are every bit as scenic as Lake Mohawk, but a little less exclusive.

Hopatcong State Park, Landing, NJ

Lake Hopatcong is about 10 miles south of Lake Mohawk in Landing, NJ. At 9 miles in length, it is the largest lake in New Jersey and the most striking feature of Hopatcong State Park. It offers many recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts and plenty to explore from your kayak with coves, islands, historic homes along the shores and canals from the old Venice section of the lake. Everything from canoes and kayaks to sailboats, jet skis and large motorboats are allowed on the lake and the lake conditions can at times create high waves. The park also offers swimming, fishing, picnic areas with volleyball, basketball and soccer and playground equipment.

Kittatinny Valley State Park, Andover, NJ

Glacial lakes, limestone outcroppings, former railroads, and variety of wildlife such as whitetail deer, wild turkey, songbirds, beaver, muskrats, and squirrel, make Kittatinny Valley State Park a unique and exciting kayaking destination.  There are four lakes in the park for boating and fishing including Lake Aeroflex and Gardner’s Pond, which form part of the headwaters of the Pequest River.  

Swartswood State Park, Swartswood, NJ

Swartswood State Park was New Jersey’s first state park. It was established in 1915 to guarantee the public would have access to the states’ third largest freshwater lake. Swartswood Lake is the state park’s main attraction and with its calm waters it attracts many kayakers, canoers, sailors, fishers and swimmers. Other recreation additivities include hiking trails, camping and picnicking.

High Point State Park, Sussex, NJ

High Point State Park is located at the northern tip of New Jersey near Middletown, Milford and Newton. The park has two lakes where boating is permitted, Sawmill Lake and Steeny Kill Lake. Both make excellent options for kayaking or canoeing, with calm, quiet waters that offer spectacular views of rich farmlands, forstes, rolling hills and lush valleys.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Bushkill, PA

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is located near Bangor, Budd Lake and East Stroudsburg. It is a 70,000-acre protected area that straddles the Delaware River along the Pennsylvania-New Jersey state line. It offers some of the region’s best kayaking, preserving a breathtaking section of the Delaware River. The relatively easy and relaxing paddle will take you past mountains, forests, and rural landscapes.
