You will likely see painted turtles, herons, kingfishers, red-wing blackbirds, dragonflies and maybe even a beaver, muskrat or otter. California Hill State Forest is a 982-acre New York State Forest in the towns of Kent and Putnam Valley in Putnam County, New York. The forest was established in 2007 and is largely undeveloped with a few rudimentary trails great for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The park’s shallow and marshy 94-acre Waywayanda Lake is a popular destination for kayakers and canoeists. There is a hand launch into the lake from Waywayanda Court. The lake is also known for a variety of fish including black crappie, brown bullhead, largemouth bass and bluegill, making it a popular fishing spot as well.

A hiker’s and kayaker’s delight, Wonder Lake State Park is a 1,100-acre park just 15 minutes from Brewster. There are over 8 miles of marked hiking trails around the lake. The Lake itself is surrounded by picturesque mountain laurel and eastern hemlock. Keep an eye out for wildlife. This hidden gem is home to otters, barred owls, coyotes and more.
